You know what had a strangely slice of life feel to it? The original season of Ranma 1/2. especially the filler scenes that focused on Akane's b-story more so than the original manga. As the first uncut anime I ever saw, all the way back in 1996, those moments struck me as odder than the magical transformations--there's an extended sequence of Akane and Ranma eating burgers and throwing wrappers at the trashcan, with elaborate shot compositions (a POV shot of Akane looking at her lap, another from behind one of the missed wrappers while Akane walks to it, bends down to pick it up, stands up, and then returns to her seat) and minimal cuts--but it also granted the show a grounded, palpable weight that was missing from pretty much every other animated show I had seen at the time, even the likes of BTAS. It was that portrayal of mundane, everyday life (in a show about a boy than can transform into a girl by being splashed with water), the audacity of shooting a scene as if it was live action, that initially hooked me on the medium of anime (it was not the only type I enjoyed, but it had an outsized influence on my tastes in anime, to the point that I've at times been too dismissive of more exaggerated and kinetic styles of anime like Studio Trigger's output, Yuasa's movies, and the bulk of battle shonen anime).

On watching this deeply personal and moving video on what anime means to you ,and how closely i related to it, I went to watch Elfen Lien again. I was apprehensive. When I watched Elfen Lied I was a mid-teen. And now being over a decade later I wondered if the pronounced edge would strike me as cringey and ruin the memory of a show I loved enough to make its intro my ringtone on my nokia brick phone. But no. Not only did I find Elfen Lied to be measured in it's depictions of taboos, be they depictions of violence and cruelty human hearts are capable of, or the unmastered sexual feelings of the characters not yet mentally matured enough to handle them. At it's core, dispite being a show about a fictitious human breed with implausible powers that frankly sound like they were listed out by an 11 year old on their tumbler blog (invisible, incorporeal, streachable, and entirely retractable arms that can deliver a virus andor rip metal bars apart) I found it ,more than the first time I watched it, to be a show about the deeply human need to feel belonging, and the cruelty people are capable of towards those they reject.

commenting 4 years later because more people need to see this. beck is so special to me there was so many moments in this video where i almost cried. and i still feel like crying now. I've loved the anime and manga for so long I can't believe I missed this but I'm glad i still search beck mongolian chop squad on UA-cam every now and then so I could watch it now.

Mushishi is my favourite anime and favourite manga of all time. I stumbled on it on crunchyroll of all places and it is to this day my luckiest find of a show I had never heard of before. I was immediately drawn into it especially because of its unique story telling and calm vibe. You covered perfectly well everything I love about this show. I find myself rewatching and rereading it every year and I never grow tired of it. That's how good it is.

Years later and i just saw this. I've been really thinking about our future lately. If we don't nuke each other. I see us going this route or Demolition man route. We are not going to stay where we are now. Even demolition route. Cybernetics will still be a part of it. That will eventually fall apart. Towards more to this. Imo!

The moment that made me love this film was when Kumiko inspired Suneo to get on his feet both literally and symbolically with her fairytale. Not only was it a turning point for their relationship and the culmination for both of their characters (finding her feet in the world and standing up for somebody, not getting stood up for; inspiring him to fight for his dream because he gave her all his empathy, determination, and resolve to move steadily in life) -- it is also a beautiful meta-narrative statement, albeit an unintentional one. The power of dreams and stories is what propels forward not only the plot of Josee, but the entertainment industry, art, and, arguably, humanity itself. I love your essays Beyond Ghibli, they're like a good movie discussion with a friend after having it watched together :)

I never knew this movie existed. Thank you for educating me, in this moment in time it is absolutely vital for me to have some hope that the wounds between bitter enemies can ever be healed. I wish peace comes soon, and lasts long. I will never choose hate and isolation, despite what my government wants of me, and what those who fight it want as well.

Both of your videos on Cowboy Bebop are incredibly well done, insightful, and a kick in the teeth. Just like the incredible show itself. There is nothing else like it out there, nor should there be. I don't acknowledge the existence of the live action thing carrying the name of this magnificent show. Never saw it; never will. I was fortunate to catch CB during one of it's early runs on Adult Swim, sometime around when the movie came out. There I was, in my late teens, flipping through the channels like the crew of the Bebop would often do. I found it just as an episode was starting with Tank! blasting in all it's mighty splendor. The episode in question was Ballad of Fallen Angels. To say I was immediately captivated would be a serious understatement. And while it was my introduction to anime, nothing has come close to matching it. Jin Roh & Ninja Scroll comprise the rest of my own triumvirate, but with a tremendous distance between them and Bebop on it's mountain top. I completely agree with your assessment that the show is perfect as is (the movie too) and nothing more needed or should've been added. Even back then, long before the way franchises are run into the ground, dug up, and run down again: I understood that this was a complete story, a symphony, that not only didn't need any addition but would've only been diminished by addition. If only more creative types had both the talent and restraint of Watanabe-San.

Id like to point out that by the age of 25 With out Cyberization the human body has replaced all the cells that a person had at say Birth. and it's a natural progression so it's really just the Consciousness isn't it.

In my mind, this anime can't be compared.

Personally i found this movie very weak. Animation alone is cool but overall is just medicore. It should be a series. In movie should be only one race shown at the end. Not worth to add it to collection

Jin Roh is an example of a movie that is impressively animated, but has a dreary, and depressing story that doesn't really have wide-audience appeal. And the story itself isn't even all that deep or profound like Ghost in the Shell, (which is full of Buddhist concepts). Jin Roh is a pretty straightforward romantic tragedy, that ends with an unhappy ending where the "hero" kills the woman he loves and then goes on to be a tool for the state. The uniform he wears has tons of Nazi symbolism as part of it, so it's basically like he's chosen to be the fascist tool, and that's how it ends. It's not exactly inspiring stuff that makes people want to watch it again and again. It's super-well animated, but I can't see a lot of people being like, "Hey all! For our anime movie night, lets watch Jin Roh! It'll be awesome!" It's not a fun watch, and leaves you feeling dreary and depressed afterwards.

As usual, great video, Joe. I was worried you would stop posting, lol. Out of those I only watched Elfen Lied, and it marked me the same way. Some that helped me fall in love with anime were the ones on Saturday morning shows here in Brazil: Rayearth, Street Fighter Victory (was already a fan of the games), Sakura Card Captor and some that I got access through the internet: Akira, Ninja Scroll, Gundam Seed and some others that are nothing to write home about. But after those, and Evangelion and Berserk, of course, my taste for animation got waaay better.

The Ghost in the Shell Movie was my first anime when i was 5 years old.

I always come back to this video. It's one of the most beautiful videos I've ever watched in my life and HR broke me. Everyone should watch it someday, it's too important not to be seen.

As someone that does music, I really hope Beck gets remade, preferably with the same tracks. I wanna see more of other bands, and especially more recording/practice stuff. Also I will be honest I did NOT like the music initially, or the show; although that was due to being surprised by how slow the pacing was. Honestly though it's an amazing show and I need more like it. Also go pick up that guitar again, it'll thank you.

this video was such a nice watch, as a 95 baby. Sailor Moon was my intro, my best friend from preschool was playing in a bouncy house, we were choosing the sailor scouts we'd be. When i was too scared to take a shower (i was scared of the running water) I leafed through her manga of it. I haven't been able to keep in touch with her (her name was sammy little, if you're out there I miss you! Sorry you only knew me when I was not the greatest) but sailor moon changed my life, and helped me find a medium that really spoke to me for the first time in a life where I'd mostly felt like a social reject. I was a rotten kid back then, I had no idea how I was supposed to move through the world, and often took cues from a mother who was absolutely batshit, but I've grown to take so much from sailor moon as an adult. Thanks for this video, it reminded me why I loved sailor moon so much, and why I feel so constantly the urge to revisit 2000s anime.
